Here at the Design Out Crime Research Centre's website, you will find resources on minimising crime, reducing antisocial behaviour and the development of anti-terrorism strategies through design of environments, products, behaviours, attitudes, social interactions and systems.
Crime and anti-social behaviour frequently is shaped by a variety of complex interdependent factors at individual, community and systems levels.
Many problems can be addressed by simple physical situational crime prevention methods such as target hardening and Crime Prevention through Environmental Design (CPTED 1st generation) approaches.
There is increasing awareness of the social dimension of crime and the subsequent need to undertake Design Out Crime and CPTED strategies that involve a social dimension aimed at changing social dynamics, attitudes, behaviours and interventions that result in positive emotional and motivational factors.
Additionally, many crime environments can be regarded as embedded in and shaped by complex systems. typically, the relationship between interventions and outcomes is not obvious and in many cases is counter intuitive. System dynamics and other systems thinking tools offer a basis (along with careful research and hard thinking) for identifying sucessful Design Out Crime strategies in these environments.
Design Out Crime approaches are also relevant in highly technical environments such as those involving computer networks, financial/ banking information systems, computer security issues, secure information management, personal data security etc.
Finally, Designout Crime can be seen as a core tool in the development of sucessful anti-terrorism strategies and the development of resilient processes that survive deep challenges from breakdowns in routine law and order.
