Many DesignOutCrime and CPTED approaches are limited in that they do not adequately include social and other soft motivational factors. A major and consistent criticism of defensible space and CPTED has been a lack of consideration for socio-economic and demographic variables and how these may affect both offender motivations, victim behaviour and guardianship provided by residents and passers by.
