PAWs Research Project - OCP

This research project investigated Pedestrian Acces Ways in Western Australia in terms of using Design Out Crime approaches to reduce crime and anti-social behaviour.

The project was funded by the Office of Crime Prevention of Western Australia with the aim of providing the material for a supplement to the Western Australian Designing Out Crime Guidelines. It was also intended to identify reliable material that could be used for  providing guidance to planners and local government councils in cases of requests for closure ofindividual pedestrian access ways.

The research developed several tools for addressing planning and crime prevention issues in relation to Pedestrian Access Ways.

From research and planning theory perspectives, some findings were new and signficant relating to:

  • Complexity of  purpose of individual accessways
  • Complexity relating to wide range of different user groups and the ways they use PAWs
  • Complexity of ownbership, agency, control and responsibility.
  • Whole of government approach that requires increased use of PAWs
  • Problems with over-simplistic use of CPTED territoriality strategies that result in manufacturing crime rather than crime reduction.
The different findings of this research has been disseminated via several  research publications.
