This section contains some images of laneways. Laneways were a common part of early development. They provided trade and services access to the rear (and occasionally sides) of premises. They also provide a shared semi-private space away from the street that is often used for a variety of informal activities by owners abutting the laneway, who typically feel some sense of territorial 'ownership' of the laneway space. Real ownership of laneways is often confused and may be private (with the developer, shared by adjoining owners, or owned by a corporation), public, vested or some other arrangement. Laneways have been found to respond well to CPTED and Designing Out Crime approaches internationally.
